This piece is oil paint on canvas and is 36″ x 48″. I painted it earlier this year.
My process includes building the frame, stretching and gessoing the canvas before I even begin the painting. This allows me to spend some time with the materials and really involve myself in the process from start to finish. I often times paint intuitively, beginning with photographic references and life experiences as a guide. I have recently been thinking a lot about the body at rest and healing, both mentally and physically. Around the time this piece was painted , just earlier this past spring, my partner had undergone intense and invasive surgery and experienced a lot of physical limitations. His body and mind needed to rest and to heal. I was thinking a lot about what this meant, what was physically going on with him, and how amazing the body is during the process of recovery.
