Inspired by a lifetime around Michigan’s Great Lakes and motivated to protect this treasured resource, I created “Preening.” This glass mosaic is a study in reflections. It changes color in changing light throughout the day. And it mirrors the reflection of light dancing on water. Great Blue Herons evoke images of grace and precise motion. With this work, I highlight a dichotomy of movement, light and reflection and contrast it with the stillness, solidity and tranquility associated with the bird.
“Preening” also represents the fragile balance between man and nature. I incorporate contrasting materials to express this idea. Each piece of glass captures fleeting reflections while layered stone adds the texture, volume and density of the Blue Heron itself.
I hope viewers of this piece find a quiet, uplifting and even familiar moment of reflection set near the water’s edge.
